Physical Therapy

What is Physical Therapy?

Physical therapy is the treatment that focuses on prevention and management of injuries or disabilities. Physical therapy can help promote healing, relieve pain and restore function and movement. A physical therapist may work to alleviate pain by either passive or active therapy. Examples of passive therapies include manual therapies, heat/ice, ultrasound, or electrical stimulation. Examples of active therapies includes stretching or range of motion exercises, strengthening exercises or aerobic conditioning. Physical therapy promotes a treatment plan that is non-pharmaceutical and based on improving a patient’s functional capacity through both passive and active treatments.

Why is Physical Therapy So Important In My Recovery?

When you are recovering from an injury, pain often causes you to move less which often leads to the loss of muscle strength and stamina. This causes the pain to increase and results in the recovering patient missing out on the endorphins that are produced through physical exercise. A physical therapist can help you work through the pain and increase your movement – a critical part of the healing process.
