What is Sciatica?

Sciatica is a common ailment that describes the symptoms of leg pain and often causes tingling, numbness or weakness that begins in the lower back and travels down the buttock and large sciatic nerve in the back of each leg.

What are the symptoms of Sciatica?

Sciatica is often diagnosed by one or more of the following symptoms:

  • Pain in one side of the leg or buttock
  • Pain that worsens when you are sitting
  • Sharp pain that makes it difficult to stand or walk
  • Pain that radiates down the leg and into the foot or toes

Can Physical Therapy Help Treat Sciatica?

By focusing on strengthening, stretching and aerobic condition under the supervision of a physical therapist, patients have been found to recover more quickly from sciatic pain and are less likely to have future episodes of pain. Importantly, physical therapy treats sciatica without the need for surgery or pharmaceutical drugs. A key component of sciatica treatment is educating the patient on the various ways to avoid re-injury.
