Whiplash and Auto-Related Injuries

Physical Therapy Following an Auto Accident

Each year, approximately 6 million car accidents occur and of those, over 2.5 million car accidents are rear-end collisions. This is the most common type of car accident and rear-end collisions can cause whiplash. Whiplash is an injury where the neck extends beyond its normal range of motion, sometimes resulting in significant pain and potentially long-term issues.

Whiplash is an injury that occurs when the neck is overextended beyond its normal range of motion and it can result in severe pain and stiffness in the head, neck or shoulders. It can also cause chronic migraines, tingling in the upper extremities, dizziness, blurred vision and memory problems.

If physical therapy is incorporated early enough, the recovery time can be relatively brief assuming there is no severe damage. The most effective treatment is often simple exercises that promote movement of the neck during the early stages. It is important for the patient to see their physician before beginning physical therapy treatment to rule out any fractures or severe tissue damage.

Why is Physical Therapy So Important?

Whiplash and other injuries relating to an auto accident may not surface right away and can lead to long-term damage if not treated immediately. For this reason, it is very important for patients to see their physical therapist and referring physician immediately following an accident for a full evaluation and injury screening. Physical therapy promotes movement, flexibility and strengthening and your physical therapist can help to target the injured area and improve your range of motion. It is important to remain physically active following an auto injury to achieve a full recovery. In addition, physical therapy can sometimes reduce the need for surgery when patients remain active and improve mobility immediately following an auto injury. Your physical therapist will coordinate with your referring physician to ensure that your treatment plan is effective and speeds your recovery, whether or not surgery is required.

In addition, physical therapy can help you recover from chronic issues arising from older car accidents including migraines, head and neck related discomfort, and fatigue. Many of the symptoms of whiplash and other auto-related injuries can linger for long periods of time following your auto accident. Your physical therapist can help you address these chronic ailments and help you on your way to recovery.

No-Fault Insurance Coverage for Auto Injuries

Minnesota is a No-Fault state, put into effect with the Minnesota No-Fault Automobile Insurance Act. In Minnesota, anyone owning a car is required to carry insurance to cover their own medical expenses and the injured person’s own insurance company will pay their medical expenses regardless of who is at fault in causing the accident.

You have the right to be treated for any injuries that were sustained during an auto accident, often at little or no cost to you. Your right to be treated is guaranteed regardless of who is at fault and the minimum coverage in Minnesota is $20,000 for medical (including physical therapy and related services). This applies to everyone in the state of Minnesota, regardless of whether you have coverage.

These benefits are also available to you if you were not driving the car, such as a passenger or a pedestrian.
